The swimming pool at Charter Community Sports Centre, Portsmouth is reopening for public swimming from Monday 2 November 2020.

The centre’s gym and sports hall reopened to the public in September. The pool remained temporarily closed for essential structural work which has now been carried out by Portsmouth City Council’s contractors.

Swimming lessons have already restarted [Thursday 29 October 2020]. Lane swimming and aqua classes will be available from Monday 2 November 2020.

Operating to Swim England guidelines and UK Active’s Covid-response measures, all pool sessions and aqua classes must be booked in advance either via the centre’s website or BH Live Active’s mobile app. Capacities have been temporarily reduced to promote social distancing, and Wet and Wacky fun pool sessions will not be available at this time.

Sessions and activities are available to members, and on a pay-as-you-go basis for non-members.

Charter Community Sports Centre has a 20m swimming pool, gym, sports hall and an outdoor multi-use games area. The sports facilities are available for public use on weekday evenings and weekends. They are managed by BH Live in partnership with Portsmouth City Council.

“We are pleased that the swimming pool at Charter has now reopened and we can start welcoming our customers back into the water,”

says Rob Cunningham, BH Live’s Head of Leisure. He adds:

“A number of new procedures are in place and our team is available in centre to help customers adjust. While some of these safety measures and sessions may feel a bit different to what people have been used to, we ask our customers to work with us, support us and to play their part in helping us get back to normal service as soon as possible.”

To help minimise time spent in the changing rooms and maintain water quality customers will be asked to arrive swim ready with swimwear underneath clothing – they will also be encouraged to shower before and after at home.

Cllr Steve Pitt, the council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Economic Development, and Deputy Leader, added:

“This is a great public swimming pool in the centre of town, for all the community to use. I’m really glad it’s reopened so people can enjoy it once again.”

More information, availability and booking details can be found at and on the BH Live Active mobile app.

Additional pools, including ‘floats and fun’ family sessions, are available at Mountbatten Leisure Centre. The swimming pools at Eastney and Pyramids remain closed.
