Green initiative to cut carbon footprint

Littledown, one the UK’s largest public leisure facilities will soon be running greener and leaner, thanks to a new energy-saving system and facilities management partnership.

Littledown is one of 43 sites managed by social enterprise BH Live, a leading operator of leisure and event venues in the south of England. With more than 1.5 million visits a year, and open seven days a week, the centre needs a lot of energy to power up its pools, gym, sport, fitness and social areas.

Recently working with Bournemouth Borough Council, BH Live has developed and implemented a number of ways to reduce its energy consumption, while maintaining comfortable and well-lit spaces for people to enjoy health and wellbeing activities. These include installing more efficient pool pumps, fitting smart, energy-saving lighting schemes and replacing energy inefficient equipment.

The latest initiative is a combined heat and power (CHP) system, installed and run under a facilities management contract by energy-saving experts EuroSite Power. There is no capital, installation and operating expenses and BH Live is guaranteed energy cost and carbon savings from the day the CHP unit is switched on.

When up and running, the system will be generating up to 2,643,795 kWh of total energy a year and saving up to 376 tonnes of CO2 –equivalent to taking 79 cars off our roads each year.

“The new CHP system will provide immediate and guaranteed risk-free savings and a more efficient energy management system at Littledown Centre for the foreseeable future,”

says Head of Facilities Management for BH Live, Peter Portnoi.

“It also demonstrates our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and fulfils our social objectives. Every surplus pound we save in energy costs will be used make our health and wellbeing facilities even more attractive for the thousands of people who visit Littledown every day.”

The CHP system is being installed in October 2015 and scheduled to be fully operational by early November 2015
